FISSH - (Fraserburgh Initiative for Swimming Sport & Health)

What Is It For?

FISSH has been formed to assist in the building of a new swimming pool and other health facilities for Fraserburgh providing a replacement for the town's existing swimming pool, which is the oldest in Aberdeenshire. While it has served the community well, it is now very much in need of replacement. Council estimates have put a figure of £4 million on refurbishing the facility and while this would certainly be an improvement, it is a belief that the money would be better spent on a brand new and state of the art facility.

The Fraserburgh Feuers Managers have donated some land, which has been an enormous boost to the Initiative and all those connected to the project will be forever grateful for this most important and highly valuable donation.

The initial plans for the facility incorporate a games hall, gymnasium, saunas and Turkish baths, a soft-play area and community rooms which can be used by local groups for meetings.

Who will use the facility?

The main purpose is to provide a 21st Century facility to support the health of Fraserburgh and its' nearby villages. The facility will be open to everyone who wants to make use of it and with the added games hall facility. will allow both existing AND new clubs to prosper. The hall will be marked out for three badminton courts and so can accomodate this sport in the town once again. The local Archery Club, supporters over many years of the existing Community Centre, will have a bigger and more fitting facility to use. The hall can be used for indoor football training or indeed any ball sports can be accomodated. Our local Cricket Club can also use the hall throughout the year, once again to maintain and improve on their excellent performances.

The swimming pool itself will have six-lanes and be able to accomodate Area competitions, thus attracting many people to Fraserburgh to stay for week-ends. A smaller and more shallow pool will also be included adjacent to the main pool and this will be used for teaching and is also perfect for disabled people's use. This will allow all forms of swimming to take place at the same time. Competition swimmers training, other enthusiasts swimming for pleasure and health and the teaching pool for beginners and also suitable for the severely disabled and for physiotherapy sessions. The teaching pool may well have accompanying slides and other fun activities.

With the inclusion of Community Rooms, local groups and those from further afield will have a private area to conduct meetings, training sessions and get-togethers. The rooms can also be used along with the soft-play areas for childrens parties. They will also be ideal for any administrative purposes attached to the many District competitions we will be looking to attract from any number of sports.

This will be a facility for the whole area to use. Local schools, local clubs, locals. WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!

Where will the building be sited?

The area of land immediately behind the Leisure Centre has been gifted by the Feuers Managers and will therefore allow the site and surrounding area to be developed further into Fraserburgh's "Sports Estate". Cricket, a fantastic all-weather pitch, tennis, kick-boxing, indoor bowling, ten-pin bowling, football pitches, a beautiful beach, some of the best surfing in Scotland AND the 7th oldest golf course in the world will all be available within moments walk of each other. AND the town shops are only minutes away.

How will the facility be run?

At this time a number of ways for the facility to be administrated are being investigated. These include a Council-run facility, a local Community Trust or perhaps even a private venture. Any decision will be taken in the best long-term interests of the town and local areas and the people. Back to top
