Fraserburgh to host next in a series of Heritage Fairs celebrating Aberdeenshire's cultural history

Date: until the end of November

Time:
Location: Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire Council has been working with schools and a range of arts, heritage and community groups to create a series of six fairs running until the end of November.

The Fraserburgh Heritage Fair, our first ever two-centre event, will take place on Saturday 11 th October at The Museum of Scottish

Lighthouses and the adjacent Fraserburgh Heritage Centre from 12.30- 4.30pm. Admission to this event is free.

It is hoped that the community will be as broadly represented as possible with a variety of stalls and activities to bring the event to life. These include stalls, displays and live performances by The Broadsea Project, Buchan Heritage Society, Aberdeenshire Library service, North-East Folklore Archive, Aberdeenshire Museum Service displays and free family activity workshops (1.30pm & 3pm).

There will also be an extract of the “Offshore” photographic exhibition, created especially to accompany the performance of Offshore, the award winning playwright Alan Wilkins' new play. The touring exhibition is the result of a successful partnership between Fraserburgh Junior Arts Society, Birds of Paradise Theatre Company and Aberdeenshire Council's Arts Development Team.

Local schools will be showcasing a range of projects that celebrate their local area, this includes a photographic exhibition by Art and Design pupils at Fraserburgh Academy .

Virginia Mayes-Wright, Director of The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses states :
"The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses is delighted to be involved in the first Heritage Fair in Fraserburgh. This is a great opportunity to show off our heritage across the community".

A spokesperson for the Fraserburgh Heritage Society also enthuses that “The Centre is delighted to take part in this pilot heritage fair. This will be built upon for a much larger event in The Year of the Homecoming 2009”

It is anticipated that the fairs programme will be extended and developed as part of the Homecoming Scotland series of events in celebration of Scotland 's past, present and future, which will take place next year.

If you would like to get involved with the Heritage Fair in your community please contact Claire Petty, Acting Senior Museums Officer on (01330) 825237 or claire.petty@aberdeenshire.gov.uk
