cover a burial cist. The Memsie cairn is one of the
major monuments of Buchan under the guardianship of
Historic Scotland. Memsie is situated 3 miles south-west
of the Broch on the A981 road to Strichen.
Crimond Kirk
This Church of Scotland Kirk is unique, in that the
church clock shows 61 minutes to the hour. This was
caused by an error on the part of the clockmaker who
put six marks into one of the five minute sectors. As
a result, days in Crimond can claim to be 24 minutes
longer than anywhere else in the world. An earlier,
pre-reformation ruin lies nearby.
Pitsligo Castle
This large and impressive ruin lies half a mile inland
from Roeshearty. It was originally built by the Fraser's
of Philorth in 1424, but passed to the Forbes of Druminnor,
who extended it in the 1570's. The last resident
of Pitsligo was Alexander Forbes, 4th Lord Pitsligo.
He was a fervent Jacobite supporter who was forced into
hiding when his lands were forfeited after Culloden.
He evaded arrest by various legendary means for the
rest of his life, dying in 1792 aged 84, still a free
man. In 1989 the castle was bought by Alexander Forbes'
descendent, Malcolm Forbes, the American multi-millionaire
publisher, who had renovations carried out to secure
the structure of the building prior to his death in
February 1990.

Willows
Animal Sanctuary provides a lifelong home for
over 300 neglected and ill-treated domestic, farm
and wild animals.
We now have young of rare breeds which include
Soay sheep, Herdwick sheep, Castlemilk Moorit
sheep, Bagot goat, Golden Guernsey goat, Angora
goat and a Tamworth Red pig.
We aim to take animals that are unsuitable for
re-homing elsewhere and consequently we represent
their last hope. Willows is unique in that
we help people too by offering contact with animals
to those who find it therapeutic. We are the only
sanctuary in this area of the north-east of Scotland
and we are totally dependent on donations from
caring people.
Come and see our state of the art 10 Pin
Bowling Alley with "glow in the dark"
features, where even the carpet glows.
We have a Snack Bar a licensed bar and lounge
in the 10 pin department area, and a Restaurant
through the hall. Our system is so
high tech, the screens have up to date animations
and our bumpers are electronically controlled,
which allows them to be lowered and raised
for people playing on the same lane. Shoes
are included in the price of the game. Contact
us for further information.
